Cedar County 4-H’er Receives Hills Bank and Trust Company Leadership Grant

AMES, Iowa – A $2,000 scholarship has been awarded to Tessa Callender, a Cedar County 4-H’er.

The Hills Bank and Trust Company Leadership Grant is awarded to as many as 20 students each year. The recipients, who apply during their junior year in high school, attend nine hours of leadership training sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust Company during their senior year. Afterward, they receive $500 per semester for two years. The scholarship may be used at any of Iowa’s accredited universities, colleges or community colleges.

Callender, Lowden, is the daughter of Keith and Lydia Callender. In high school, she participated in choir, theatre, drama, 4-H, National Honor Society, mock trail, softball and the math club while serving as a manager for the football and wrestling teams. She also was a member of the student council advisory board, an Iowa FFA degree recipient, co-editor of her school newspaper, a marching-band drum major and a southeast district FFA officer. A Coca Cola Scholars semifinalist and National Council on Youth Leadership nominee, Callender received numerous Division I ratings for state speech contests and was recognized for the Quad City Times Salute to Academics and Achievements.

“The training program has given me the chance to develop more communication skills, meet new people, see things from a different perspective and recognize my strengths and how I can positively utilize them,” she said. “It has given me more confidence in what I do and has allowed me to become more excited about all of the possibilities that my future holds.”

A recent graduate of North Cedar High School, Callender plans to attend Iowa State University, majoring in agricultural education and communications.

In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved or how to apply for a 4-H Scholarship, contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
