Hardin County 4-H Member Receives Lloyd Inc. 4-H Scholarship

7/7/2009

AMES, Iowa – A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Hardin County 4-H member. Casey J. Balvanz, Nevada, has received a Lloyd Inc. 4-H Scholarship sponsored by Lloyd Inc.

Balvanz, a nine-year member, is the daughter of Chuck and Carol Balvanz, Hubbard. She was involved in the beef, horse, dog and home improvement project areas and has received premier sheep exhibitor and outstanding quilt exhibit awards at the state level along with an area citizenship award. A county 4-H council member, Balvanz also has served as club president and vice president and attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.

“4-H participation has given me a place to practice and a process to use to reach my career goals. My livestock projects have helped me gain self confidence, learn the value of constructive criticism and build an attitude to keep improving myself,” she said. “4-H has given me a ‘leg up’ in understanding what it takes to truly succeed.”

A graduating senior at Iowa State University, Balvanz is majoring in animal science and plans to attend the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine to become a large-animal vet. As an undergraduate she has been involved in the meat animal judging team, Rodeo Club and Pre-Vet Club and is a member of the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the American Society of Animal Science Scholars.

In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved or how to apply for a 4-H scholarship, contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
