1/8/2009

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Iowa Military Families are invited to the Military Family Jamboree March 22 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Long Lines Recreation Center in Sioux City.

“It will be a fun family get-away and it’s free,” said Victoria Schmidt, Operation: Military Kids coordinator with Iowa State University Extension. “Families can climb the rock wall, play Wii, make fun crafts, play games and enjoy refreshments. Resources to help Military Families also will be available.”

Resource tables will be staffed by Military One Source, Support Siouxland Soldiers, Congressman Steve King’s office, Community Action Agency, Woodbury County Extension and Operation: Military Kids.

Military Families who plan to participate are asked to call with the number of family members attending by Wednesday, March 4. Please call either Woodbury County Extension, (712) 276-2157, or Lori Risdal, 185ARW/Wing Family Programs Coordinator, (712) 233-0817; or e-mail Schmidt at vschmidt@iastate.edu.

“We’re asking families to call with numbers in advance so that we have enough snacks and craft supplies on hand,” Schmidt said.

The Military Family Jamboree is sponsored by Operation: Military Kids and Woodbury County Extension. Operation: Military Kids provides positive youth development programs and community-based support for children and families affected by the increased mobilization and deployment of troops. National and State Operation: Military Kids partners include U.S. Army Child and Youth Services, USDA National 4-H Headquarters, Iowa State University Extension/4-H, Iowa National Guard and other state and community agencies and organizations who provide programs and community-based support for children and families throughout the deployment cycle.
