DES MOINES – Pretty in Park claimed the top prize in the Iowa 4-H “Stitch This!” fashion design event this weekend at the Iowa State Fair.

The team of Debbie Bierschenk, Kathy Manternach, Hanna Mosley and Mandey Lund, all of Benton County, received the Golden Needle award following a runway-style fashion show Saturday night, Aug. 22, on the 4-H Exhibits Building’s center stage.

They were among 13 teams of 4-H teens who spent 16 hours over two days tearing apart wedding dresses to create original garments during the competition in the 4-H Exhibits Building, all the while under the public’s watchful eye.

Some joined 4-H for the contest. Others learned how to sew for the first time, and many have dreams of careers in the fashion industry. Regardless of their experience or goals, however, many of them enjoyed the contest and would easily participate again.

“I learned how to work with other people especially since our team didn’t know each other beforehand. We worked really well together,” said Jenna Tilstra of the Sew What? team. “I also learned how hectic it can be to design a dress in two days, but I would definitely do it again. It was so much fun.”

This first place prize includes an appearance on Michele Beschen’s “b. Organic” TV show. The team members who are planning to major in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University will receive a $500 scholarship. In addition, each team member received two tickets to the 2009 ISU Fashion Show.

Get Bedazzled received the second place Silver Spool award of a $50 gift certificate to Blonde Genius and a DVD of the 2009 ISU Fashion Show for each team member. The team includes Kristina Walz, Erin Ott, MaryAnn Gibney, and Miranda Walz, all of Clayton County.

DKTM (Dominate Kickin Team Manifesto) received the Artistry award for showing the most creativity. The team includes Kallen Anderson, Danielle Border, Meghan Metier, and Travis Ness, all of Webster County

Fashionably Green received the received the Synergy award for demonstrating the best teamwork. The team includes Jade Moret, Kaitlyn Huisman, and Amanda Woudstra, all of Sioux County.

Fashionably Green also received the People’s Choice award, receiving more than 800 text message votes during the course of the competition.

The award-winning teams received glass trophies and their garments will be placed on display at Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Building on the ISU campus.

In addition, each participant received a goodie bag from the ISU College of Human Sciences and a special “Stitch This!” t-shirt.

“Stitch This!” featured celebrity judges: Michele Beschen, of the “b. Organic” television series; Colleen Kelly, of Star 102.5; and Ann Thye, Iowa State University academic adviser for the Apparel Merchandising, Design and Production program. All were very complimentary of the participants, new garments and contest itself.

“I watch Project Runway all the time, but the most sewing I do is buttons,” said Kelly. “I’m inspired by all the creativity here. It takes a lot of teamwork and working under pressure, but it’s great to see how the 4-H’ers are using their imaginations.”

Beschen was also impressed by the originality. “It was really fun to be here,” she said. “It was very innovative and resourceful, and it’s so exciting to see their ideas and see them take action.”

Speaking from the field of design, Thye went beyond creativity to express what the contest meant for the future of 4-H.

“It’s bringing 4-H into the 21st century,” she said.

“Stitch This!” was sponsored by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development, ISU College of Human Sciences, Michele Beschen and Estilo Salon, which provided hair and make-up stylists for all the models in the runway show.
