Cattle Industry Update for Veterinarians Scheduled for Early May

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University clinicians and Extension specialists will be providing area veterinarians with up-to-date information on the cattle industry at an upcoming May meeting.

"This in-service for practicing veterinarians has been well received by practitioners from Iowa and Missouri", said Joe Sellers, ISU Extension beef specialist. "It provides an opportunity for networking among area veterinarians, Extension staff, and researchers."

The meeting will be held May 5 starting at 9 a.m. at the McNay Research and Demonstration Farm in Lucas County, Iowa. Topics on the agenda include the following:

• Diagnostic laboratory update
• Toxicology update on nitrates, prussic acid, and winter tetany
• Receiving and treatment strategies for beef feedlots
• Cow-calf industry trends and outlook
• Update on co-product feeding trials and sulfur levels
• Grazing and wildlife

The Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University was established in 1996 with the goal of supporting the growth and vitality of the state’s beef cattle industry. It serves as the university’s extension program to cattle producers and is comprised of faculty and staff from ISU Extension and the colleges of agriculture and life sciences and veterinary medicine. Together, the Iowa Beef Center’s members work to develop and deliver the latest in research-based information regarding the beef cattle industry.
