Put Food and Fun on Your Schedule with New Calendar
AMES, Iowa -- “Food and Fun for Healthy Families” is the focus of a 2009 calendar from Iowa State University Extension. Each month features an easy-to-prepare recipe with color photo, menu idea and nutrition analysis, plus an idea for a family activity.
“Families can use the calendar as a daily reminder to choose healthy habits’” said Peggy Martin, Iowa State University Extension nutrition education program coordinator. “They can encourage each other to select low-fat foods, eat smaller portions, share mealtimes and have fun being active.”
The 11x8 ½-inch calendar also includes tips for enjoying meals together as a family. “A family meal is when the people you live with come together to eat and talk,” said Martin. “It can include everyone or be just you and your child. It doesn’t have to be fancy and it can be eaten in a quiet place at home or away. Sharing food and conversation should be a favorite time of the day.”
This is the twelfth year that ISU Extension has developed a food-based calendar for use in nutrition programs across the country and in Guam. Both English and Spanish versions are available from local ISU Extension offices, as well as from the Extension online store at www.extension.iastate.edu. English calendars (EFNEP 230) are priced at $2.25; the Spanish version (EFNEP 230S) is $1.25.
