AMES, Iowa – Kent Irwin of Sac County has been selected to represent Iowa at the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 28 – Dec. 2. He is sponsored by the Iowa 4-H Foundation National 4-H Congress Endowment. Irwin, 17, is the son of Chris and Susan Irwin of Sac City.
Irwin is one of 22 youth from Iowa who will attend the leadership conference, entitled “Accept the Challenge.” Iowa’s Congress delegates are selected through interviews and evaluation of support materials. Irwin, a junior at East Sac County High School, was chosen for his leadership, citizenship and overall achievement in the 4-H program.
During his six years in 4-H, Irwin has completed several major projects including communication, citizenship, leadership, photography, and food and nutrition. He has received state 4-H honors including project awards for communication and the educational presentation Seal of Excellence. At the county level, he received recognition for record-keeping and senior educational presentation. Irwin served as sentinal and first aid in his local 4-H club. He also participated in county 4-H council, area 4-H council, the Citizenship-Washington Focus and the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“4-H has improved my speaking skills and will help me with jobs in the future,” Irwin said. “I plan on going into law and the skills I learned in 4-H will help me succeed.”
