OELWEIN, Iowa -- The Fayette County Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Team placed first in the annual 4-H Youth Dairy Quiz Bowl, held June 13 at the Oelwein High School in Oelwein. The members of the Fayette County team will represent Iowa 4-H at the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Ky., in November.
Each year, the Fayette County 4-H Dairy Club presents a traveling trophy to each division winner, in honor and memory of Connie Stewart and her daughter Sarah Stewart.
Winning senior team members from Fayette County include Jeremy Lueder, Dan Stewart, Katie Steinlage, Amy Schmitt and Katie Adams. The winning senior team was coached by Marilyn Steffens.
Second place in the senior division was a team composed of three counties. Jordan Hanson from Winneshiek County, Matt Henkes from Clayton County, and Jacob Scott and Chris Stewart from Fayette County were the team members.
The event provides some experience for the up and coming youth to demonstrate their knowledge about the dairy industry. Both intermediate and junior teams competed in the day’s events as well.
The intermediate division winners were from Dubuque County. Team members included Scott Wolf, Josh Simon, Michael Bord, and Bethany Simon. Shirley Simon is the coach for Dubuque County.
The second place intermediate team was from Delaware County. Team members included Julietta Weber, Jacob Fitzpatrick, Nicole Engelhen and James Goldsmith. Jennifer Zumbach is the coach for the team.
The junior division winners were also from Delaware County. The winning team members included Sydney Litterer, Katelyn Goldsmith and Megan Kesger. The team was coached by Anna Troester. The second place team was Fayette County with members including Ashley Baumler, Kayla Fagle, Katie Stewart, Caryn Stewart, Mary Scott and Dayle Lantzky.
The scores of a written exam, team questions and toss-up competition combined to determine the winners of each match in this double elimination event. The Iowa 4-H Foundation Dairy Endowment provided plaques for the event and will provide funding for the senior team’s trip to Louisville.
