AMES, Iowa -- Audio of the following Iowa State University Extension interviews is available for download (week of July 14). For more information, contact Doug Cooper, ISU Extension audio producer, levachek@iastate.edu.
Pedersen on soybeans -- ISU Extension soybean agronomist Palle Pedersen says it is (probably) too late to plant or replant soybeans in Iowa and still expect a decent yield. Pedersen also says disease problems could be bad this year. He recommends producers routinely scout their fields. SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) is starting to show up early in many soybean fields this summer.
Taylor on weather -- ISU Extension climatologist Elwynn Taylor says severe weather outbreaks will continue to move across the state, but they will be scattered. He says some areas will receive too much rain, while others may be too dry.
Taylor and Pope on crop conditions -- Crop conditions in Iowa are about 60 percent in the good to excellent category for both corn and soybeans, despite the excessive rains and flooding. ISU Extension climatologist Elwynn Taylor and program specialist Rich Pope say farmers are concerned the weather could turn dry this summer – and/or too cold this fall.
Baker on the Beginning Farmer Center -- There have been some changes or enhancements to some beginning farmer programs in Iowa. Dave Baker with the Beginning Farmer Center says the changes should allow more young people to qualify for loan programs. Also, as Iowa farmers age there will be significant turnover of land ownership during the next few years.
Gleason on floods and plant disease -- ISU Extension plant pathologist Mark Gleason says floods and excessive rain have increased the likelihood of plant diseases this summer.
Broshar on facilitation -- ISU Extension youth and community economic development specialist Don Broshar talks about the role of a facilitator in working with various groups or committees.
Van Wyngarden on Elderhostel -- ISU Extension community economic development specialist Diane Van Wyngarden says people from both coasts are coming to Iowa to take part in an Extension Elderhostel program.
Scholl on community development -- The Northeast Iowa Community Development Conference will be held in September. Extension community economic development specialist Sandy Scholl says the keynote speaker, David Lyons, will discuss the bio-economy in Iowa.
