Buchanan County 4-H'er Receives Iowa State Fair Scholarship
AMES, Iowa – A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Buchanan County 4-H member. Emily Schmitz, Independence, has received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Agriculture Advancement.
Schmitz, a 10-year 4-H member, is the daughter of Jackie and the late Denny Schmitz. She has participated in veterinary science, animal science, home improvement and leadership. She received awards for leadership, showmanship, achievement, record books and dairy projects. She served as president and vice-president of her 4-H club. She was also involved with the county 4-H council and National 4-H Congress, and attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“4-H is an irreplaceable part of my life. The opportunities that it has given me are what have made me who I am today,” Schmitz said. “One of those experiences is participating in the Iowa State Fair for eight years. One of my greatest memories of 4-H is getting to show my animals and projects at state level.
A recent graduate of Independence High School, Schmitz plans to attend Iowa State University, majoring in microbiology and pre-veterinary medicine.
In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved or how to apply for a 4-H scholarship, contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
