4-H Horse Jamboree Winners Announced

AMES, Iowa - Almost 300 Iowa 4-H'ers competed in the 10th annual 4-H Youth Horse Jamboree April 12-13 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Iowa Horse Fair. A portion of the winners will represent Iowa 4-H at the Denver Horse Classic in January 2009.

Horse Jamboree contests give youth an opportunity to demonstrate their equine knowledge and skills. Event sponsors include the Iowa Horse Council, Nutrena Feeds, The Western Edge, Whistle Creek Farm, Hitchin’ To Go Driving Club of Iowa and Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.

Winners who will represent Iowa at the Denver Horse Classic include the top hippology and quiz bowl teams, along with the top individuals in both demonstration and public speaking.

The hippology contest showcases knowledge of and skill in equine science and husbandry. First place in senior hippology went to Savannah Farrell of Madison County with 210 points. The team from Benton County won first place in the senior hippology team with teammates Andrea Hallberg, Kathy Manternach, Tyler Schwab and Mary Wrage with a total of 577 points. Katie Cedar from Cherokee County placed first in junior hippology with 90 points. Katie and teammates Chyenne Mortenson, Rachael Corken and Lauren Woltman won the junior hippology team competition with 240 points.

Quiz bowl contestants answer one-on-one, toss-up and bonus questions in a timed situation. First place in the senior division went to the Madison County team of Clint Stanley, Abbey Smith, Kelsey Patience and Savanah Farrell. Junior division honors went to the Benton County team including Amy Formanek, Emily Coover, Molly O'Brien, Julie Long and Debbie Manternach. Senior and junior individual quiz bowl winners were Clint Stanley of Madison County and Molly O’Brien of Benton County.

The always competitive team grooming competition drew a big crowd to watch as teams of four youth hurry to clean a “dirtied” horse in 15 minutes. Winning the junior division was west Pottawattamie County with 87.4 points. The team consisted of Charlotte Berryman, Mallory Huggins, Markayla Murdoch and Martina Murdoch. Benton County members Dani Coover, Andrea Hallberg, Kathy Manternach and Tanner Schwab took the senior division with 85.25 points.
