AMES, Iowa -- The Delaware County Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Team placed first in the annual 4-H Youth Dairy Quiz Bowl, June 7 at the Starmont High School near Arlington, Iowa. The members of the Delaware County team will represent Iowa 4-H at the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Ky., in November.
“The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl is an event that the youth look forward to every year,” said Michael Anderson, program specialist with Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. “The dairy industry is a key component of Iowa’s economic strength and this contest enables the youth to educate themselves and test their knowledge of it.”
The Fayette County 4-H Dairy Club presented a traveling trophy to each division winner in honor and memory of Connie Stewart and her daughter Sarah Stewart.
Winning senior team members from Delaware County include Brian Bagge, Nathan Carroll, Pat Freiburger and Kathy Nefzger. The winning senior team was coached by Jennifer Kunde, Katie and Kelli Freiburger and Michael Tekippe.
Second place in the senior division went to a team with members from three counties: Jordan Hanson from Winneshiek County, Matt Henkes from Clayton County, and Molly Tauke and Emma Saunders, both from Delaware County.
The event also provides experience for the up-and-coming dairy youth to demonstrate their knowledge about the dairy industry through competition.
The Dubuque County team won the intermediate division. Team members included Emily Simon, Hans Gaul, Scotty Wulf, Jessie Hammerand and Bethany Simon. Dee Gaul, Shirley Simon and Kim Wolf coached the team.
Fayette County took second place with its intermediate team of Logan Worden, Jacob Scott, Rachel Scott, Chris Stewart and Chelsey Fagel. Marilyn Steffens coaches the team.
Dubuqe County also had the junior division winners with a team of Austin Knapp, Gretchen Gaul, Jill Wolf and Josh Thibadeau. Fayette County also took second place with a team of Molly Schnitt, Doyle Lantzky, Kathryn Appler and Kelli Steinlage.
The scores of a written exam, team questions and toss-up competition are combined to determine winners in this double elimination event. The Iowa 4-H Foundation Dairy Endowment provided plaques for the event and will provide funding for the senior team trip to Louisville.
