AMES, Iowa -- A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to an Osceola County 4-H member. Michael Berkland, Sibley, has received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement.
Berkland, a nine-year 4-H member, is the son of Daniel and Loretta Berkland. He has participated most actively in the project areas of horse, leadership and citizenship. On the county level, he has received awards for member of the year, leadership and citizenship. He served as president, treasurer and grant-writer of his 4-H club. He was also a member in his county 4-H council and county youth committee and attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“Active participation in 4-H helped identify my career goals and gave me valuable ‘real world’ experience,” Berkland said. “4-H gives its members the tools to turn their dreams into reality by celebrating leadership, citizenship and communication.”
Berkland is a graduate of Sibley-Ocheyedan High School and plans to major in animal science pre-veterinarian at Iowa State University.
In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved, or how to apply for a 4-H scholarship contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
