Paul Coates, director of the Iowa State University Extension Office of State and Local Government Programs, has received the 2007 International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) Institute Director Award of Excellence in recognition of his dedication to the municipal clerks profession.
Coates has been the director of the Iowa Municipal Clerks Institute since 1999 and has played a key role in presenting the institute as well as the Iowa Municipal Clerks Academy for nearly 30 years. Each year, the Iowa Municipal Clerks Institute provides educational credit toward certification by either IIMC or the Iowa Certification for Municipal Professionals Program to more than 200 municipal professionals from throughout Iowa. The Iowa Municipal Clerks Academy is also offered annually to graduates of the clerks institute.
The Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association nominated Coates for the award. Marian Karr, city clerk for Iowa City, assembled and submitted the nomination to IIMC. “Paul has been so active in our organization for so many years, it seemed to be the perfect time to recognize him,” Karr said.
The nomination was supported by clerks and other municipal professionals statewide, who described Coates as “…the driving force in establishing Iowa as a national and international leader in continuing professional development of municipal clerks, finance officers and administrators.”
Coates accepted the award at the 2007 IIMC Annual Conference in New Orleans.
