AMES, Iowa -- A train the facilitator opportunity for Iowa professionals or volunteers who work with families is being offered in June for the Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14, sponsored by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension.
"We hope parents or people who work with families in the state will save these dates, June 20-21, for this training, which will be held on the Iowa State University campus," said Beth Fleming, ISU Extension family life specialist.
According to Fleming, the Strengthening Families Program 10-14 is a parent, youth and family skills-building experience that can prevent teen substance abuse and behavior problems, strengthen parenting skills, and build family strengths. "Parents and youth learn together in a very fun, interactive environment."
Janet Brown, ISU Extension family life specialist and co-instructor for this training, describes the special features of the program. "This program has been designed and used with diverse populations in rural and urban settings across the country. Its effectiveness has been scientifically evaluated over time and has earned the program national recognition."
The two day training is required for anyone who would like to be certified as a Strengthening Families Program 10-14 teacher in Iowa. Three people need to work as a team to do the program. The cost is $250 per person, which covers handouts, snacks and light meals. For details, contact Fleming at (515) 382-6551, bflem@iastate.edu, or Brown, at (641) 423-0844, jmbrown@iastate.edu.
Registration is required. For the on-line registration form, go to www.extension.iastate.edu/sfp/inside/training.ia.html.
