AMES, Iowa – Leah Henkes of Clayton County received a state 4-H dairy project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Iowa 4-H Foundation and the Zetta Lind Memorial. Henkes, 16, is the daughter of Trent and Leslie Henkes of Luana.

During her seven years in 4-H, Henkes has completed several major projects including dairy, veterinary science and leadership. She has received many state 4-H honors including intermediate and senior dairy showmanship, high individual senior in the dairy judging contest and first junior team dairy judging. Along with these, Henkes has received many county-level honors such as dairy showmanship, supreme champion dairy heifer and perfect scores on dairy and food and nutrition project award applications. She has been president, reporter, historian and treasurer of her 4-H club. Henkes has served on her county 4-H council and green team and was a judge at the Iowa All Star Team at NAILE in Louisville, Ky. She also helps coach her county dairy judging team and hosts showmanship and fitting clinics for her 4-H club and future members.

“4-H is very important to me,” said Henkes. “I have learned to be a confident speaker, an excellent dairy cattle judge and a top showperson. Because of my experiences in 4-H, I plan to pursue a career in the dairy industry.”

Henkes is a junior at MFL Mar Mac High School.
