AMES, Iowa – Michael Berkland of Osceola County received a state 4-H citizenship project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Iowa 4-H Foundation and the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment. Berkland, 17, is the son of Drs. Daniel and Loretta Berkland of Sibley.
During his nine years in 4-H, Berkland has completed several major projects including citizenship, communication, horse, dog and beef. Along with these, Berkland has received many county honors including an award in citizenship, Danforth “I Dare You,” award and super showmanship. He also has been the president, treasurer, photographer and librarian of his 4-H club. He also served on his county 4-H council and youth committee and participated in the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. Berkland was recognized by the Sioux City Journal and the “Siouxland Cares Mayor’s Commission” for outstanding citizenship.
“4-H has provided me with the opportunity to develop and use my leadership skills,” said Berkland. “I have also become a more active member of my community, serving on the strategic planning board of my town. 4-H has given me the life skills to achieve my best.”
Berkland is a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School.
