Dads—Stay Active with Your Kids
AMES, Iowa—One of the best ways for dads to get to know their children is to do things together. “Children benefit when fathers teach skills, model values and keep lines of communication open while talking, working and playing with their children,” said Kristi Cooper, an Iowa State University Extension family life field specialist.
In a 2000 survey of 200 Iowa children ages 3-19, kids named their favorite things to do with dad or grandpa. The top picks were fishing, fixing things, playing sports and riding together, whether it is on a bicycle, motorcycle, horse or car.
Cooper said that one featured father on the “Me and My Dad” Web site, Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffrey, understands this important role for fathers. He plans to continue to stay connected to his four adult children by planning active outings with them.
