Delegation from China’s Gansu Province to Discuss Increased Cooperation with Iowa
AMES, Iowa -- Five senior administrators from Lanzhou Jiaotong University (LZJTU) and Gansu Province, People’s Republic of China will visit Iowa State University and tour in Iowa Oct. 15-17. Gansu Provincial Deputy Governor Ying Li and LZJTU President Ren En’en lead the delegation.
The delegation’s visit is part of an agreement between the two universities to work on educational programs as well as explore further collaboration between businesses and industries in Iowa and Gansu Province.
The delegation will meet with Iowa State faculty and administrators. They also will visit state government leaders. Their visit is coordinated at Iowa State by ISU Extension through the continuing and distance education unit.
Eldon Uhlenhopp, interim director of continuing and distance education and associate vice president for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, said. “The Chinese delegation will meet with Iowa State administrators and faculty to strengthen the existing partnership. They will meet with Iowa leaders to explore opportunities to stimulate Iowa's and Gansu Province’s economic growth.”
The two universities currently have an educational dual degree program in civil engineering, architecture, landscape architecture and community and regional planning. Students in the program earn bachelor’s degrees from both universities. They study the first two years at LZJTU and complete their studies at Iowa State. The first group of Chinese students arrived at Iowa State this past summer. A second group of Chinese students is scheduled to come to Iowa State in summer 2007.
The Chinese delegation will visit engineering and design classes and studios, the C6 virtual reality theater and continuing and distance education offices on campus.
Gansu Province in northwest China has a population of more than 26 million. LZJTU has a student population of 26,000.
