AMES, Iowa—Brendan Dunbar of Dallas County has been selected to represent Iowa at the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga. Nov. 24-28. He is sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Life Charitable Trust and Ron and Florine Swanson. Dunbar, 18, is the son of Timothy and Teresa Dunbar of Cumming.
Dunbar will join 22 other youth from Iowa at the leadership conference, entitled "Lead, Learn, Grow." Iowa's Congress delegates are selected through interviews and evaluation of support materials. Dunbar, a senior at Dowling Catholic High School, was chosen for his leadership, citizenship and overall achievement in the 4-H program.
During his five years in 4-H, Dunbar has completed several major projects including leadership, communication, citizenship, aeronautics and woodworking. He has received state 4-H honors such as Seals of Excellence and certificates of achievement at the state fair and the Prudential Citizenship Award for being in the top 10 percent of citizenship volunteers in Iowa. Along with these, Dunbar has received honors at the county level including outstanding senior member, the Danforth “I Dare You” Award and the Dallas County leadership and citizenship award. He also has served as president and junior leader of science and engineering of his 4-H club. He has served on his county and state 4-H councils and participated in the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“4-H has taught me many valuable life skills that I know I will use in the future,” said Dunbar. “It has especially helped me with interviewing, communication and leadership skills.”
