GirLinks Connects High School - College Females

11/27/2006

AMES, Iowa--Iowa State's Program for Women in Science and Engineering uses technology as a way to connect with high school students in local communities.

GirLinks is a free online mentoring program in which high school females interested in science, technology, engineering and math can talk via e-mail with female undergraduates at Iowa State University majoring in one of those fields.

GirLinks may help alleviate some of the anxiety brought on by applying to college and making the transition to college, according to Carol Heaverlo, outreach coordinator for the women's science program. "It’s a fun and simple way to find out about life at ISU and college life in general. Get pointers from students who have been there and build a relationship with a real student."

The Iowa State program is currently accepting registration from high school students in Iowa. Go to http://www.pwse.iastate.edu/girlinks/index.html for more information and to register.

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension also offers ways for elementary and secondary students to connect with science through its Extension to Science, Engineering and Technology (E-SET) program. For more information visit the E-SET Web site or contact a local county office of ISU Extension.
