AMES, Iowa – Kourtney Determan of Sac County has been selected to represent Iowa at the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga. Nov. 25-29. She is sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Life Charitable Trust and the Iowa Pork Producers. Determan, 16, is the daughter of Steve and Barb Determan of Early.

Determan will join 22 other youth from Iowa at the leadership conference, entitled "Lead, Learn, Grow." Iowa's Congress delegates are selected through interviews and evaluation of support materials. Determan, a junior at Schaller-Crestland High School, was chosen for her leadership, citizenship and overall achievement in the 4-H program. 

During her nine years in 4-H, Determan has completed several major projects including leadership, citizenship, communication, clothing and sheep. She has received state 4-H awards including a state communication project award and excellence in extemporaneous speaking, working exhibit and educational presentation. Along with these, Determan received top awards at the county-level for clothing selection, fashion revue and junior and senior record books. She also has been the secretary and reporter of her 4-H club. She has served on her county, area and state 4-H councils and also has been a participant at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.

“4-H has made me a better person all around,” said Determan. “It has helped me develop skills such as citizenship, leadership and communications, and it has encouraged me to become more active in other organizations as well.”
