AMES, Iowa–First-time deer hunters can gain experience during the Youth Education Deer Hunt the weekend of Nov. 17 - 19 at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid.
“Here is a great opportunity to participate in a youth deer hunt at the 4-H camp,” said Jim Pease, Iowa State University Extension wildlife specialist. “If you’re age 12 and over and have never had an opportunity to hunt deer but have passed your hunter education course, please check this out.”
Youth, accompanied by a mentor, will spend two nights and three days learning and hunting on the center’s spacious grounds.
“Youth may come with a parent or other adult mentor,” Pease said, “but if they don’t have a mentor, we will provide one for them.”
The $100 registration fee covers meals and lodging for both youth and mentor. The schedule includes deer biology, safety and laws, equipment and a full day and a half of hunting. Department of Natural Resources personnel will be on-site to lead educational programs.
Youth need to provide their own shotgun (12 or 20 gauge) and ammunition as well as have a hunter safety certificate, hunting license and habitat stamp. Also required by the Nov. 17 registration is a deer tag for weekend hunting ($26). The event will be an antlerless deer hunt.
For more information on this event and registration contact the Iowa 4-H Center camp manager John Roosa at jroosa@iastate.edu or (515) 795-3338.
The Iowa 4-H Center is open to all youth and is a partnership between the Iowa 4-H Foundation and Iowa State University Extension.
