Story County 4-H Member Receives Phyllis J. Olson 4-H Scholarship

AMES, Iowa-- A $500 scholarship has been awarded to a Story County 4-H member. Garrett Skaar, Story City, has received the Phyllis J. Olson 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Phyllis J. Olson Scholarship Fund through the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Skaar, a seven-year member, is the son of Brad and Julie Skaar. He was active in beef, sheep, communication and photography project areas and has served on county 4-H Council and Youth Committee. Skaar also has served as president, vice-president and reporter of his local 4-H club. He has placed first overall as Premier Showmanship Exhibitor in the Iowa State Fair. Skaar also has attended the World Food Prize Youth Institute and received a Borlaug-Ruan International Internship to Ethiopia that he said has shown him "a large and growing world-wide need for a greater and more diverse food supply."

"I first gained interest in food science as a 4-H member and from the experiences of this program I've developed a particular interest in meat science and food production," Skaar said. "I have had fantastic leadership opportunities in 4-H and I feel that preparing myself to be part of an international career is what I need to do in order to compete for a job in this continually shrinking world."

Skaar is currently majoring in food science at Iowa State University. In his first year at Iowa State, he has served on the Alpha Gamma Rho Judiciary Board and the College of Human Sciences Council.
