Youth Win State 4-H Horse Jamboree Honors

AMES, Iowa - Almost 200 Iowa 4-H'ers competed in the eighth annual 4-H Youth Horse Jamboree March 25 and 26 at Iowa State University. Ten of the winners will represent Iowa 4-H at the Denver Horse Classic in January 2007.

Horse Jamboree contests give youth an opportunity to demonstrate their equine knowledge and skills. Event sponsors include the Iowa Horse Industry Council, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Winners who will represent Iowa at the Denver Horse Classic include the top hippology and quiz bowl teams, along with the top individuals in both demonstration and public speaking.

The hippology contest showcases knowledge of and skill in equine science and husbandry. First place in senior hippology went to Bethany Drury of Story County with 325 points. Drury also won first place in the senior hippology team with her Story County teammates Kiersten Fevold and Tracy Woodland with a total of 881 points. Emily Robinson from Mills County placed first in junior hippology with 102 points. The Story County junior hippology team including Cori Fitzgerald, Mary Kate Gotta, Makayla Klonglan and Connie Otto won first place in their division with 272 points.

Quiz bowl contestants answer one-on-one, toss-up and bonus questions in a timed situation.  First place in the senior division went to the Mills County team of Kalyn Schaefer, Catlin Buley, Glenn Robinson and Sara Kowskie. Junior division honors also went to the Mills County team including Cassie Ford, Meghan Gray, Emily Robinson and Nolan Robinson. Senior and junior individual quiz bowl winners were Glenn Robinson and Emily Robinson, respectively, both of Mills County.
