Johnson County Student Receives Hills Bank 4-H Scholarship

6/13/2006

AMES, Iowa -- A $2,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Johnson County student. Bridget Shields, Iowa City, received a Hills Bank 4-H Scholarship sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust Company.

The Hills Bank 4-H Scholarship is awarded to as many as 20 students each year. The recipients, who apply during their junior year in high school, attend nine hours of leadership training sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust Company during their senior year. Afterward, they receive $500 per semester for two years. The scholarship may be used at any of Iowa's accredited universities, colleges or community colleges.

"It [the training program] has had an immense effect on the ways in which I deal with people everyday," Shields, daughter of Richard and Kolleen Shields, said. "I have learned my strengths and weaknesses and how to manipulate both in order to be the best leader and person possible."

Shields is a member of 4-H and has participated in softball, track, student senate and Math Club. She is a National Honor Society member, on the list of "Who's Who in American High Schools" and is a BPA National Qualifier.

Shields has served as a parliamentarian for her school's executive board and as softball captain.

As a senior at Iowa City West High School, Shields plans to attend Drake University to begin her studies in pre-law.
