AMES, Iowa – Campers who are headed to Iowa 4-H Center camps this summer should remember when packing, less is more.
The American Camp Association has provided the following tips to make packing for camp easier. Although packing for camp can be stressful, youth should avoid overstuffing their bags. Review the camp’s suggested packing list.
Be sure to check the weather forecasts for the camp area. Even if clear skies are predicted, youth should be prepared for varying weather.
Finally, campers should be sure to bring the following basics:
· Tops – T-shirts, tank tops, long-sleeve shirts, sweaters and sweat shirts
· Bottoms – shorts, sweat pants and jeans
· Outerwear – swimsuit and jacket or raincoat
· Personal – underwear, pajamas and robe
· Footwear – boots, tennis shoes, sandals and socks
Making a bathroom kit is a great way for youth to stay organized and save space. In a plastic, sealable bag, include:
· Hairbrush or comb
· Shampoo and conditioner
· Soap or bodywash and a washcloth
· Toothpaste, toothbrush and holder
· Deodorant
· Insect repellent
· Shaving gear and/or feminine products
· Sun block and lip balm with UV protection
The 4-H Center summer camps require linens. Check the packing list to determine how much bedding or number of towels to bring. Campers can save more space by keeping other gear, such as books, magazines, toys and stationery to a minimum. Youth should label belongings to ensure they come home with them and review the camp’s policy on electronics.
