AMES, Iowa – The Dubuque County Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Team placed first in the annual 4-H Youth Dairy Quiz Bowl, held June 8 at the Starmont High School near Arlington. The members of the Dubuque County team will represent Iowa 4-H at the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Ky., in November.

The quiz bowl provides an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their knowledge about the dairy industry. The winner of each match in the double-elimination event was determined by a combination of the scores for a written quiz, team questions and a toss-up competition.  Intermediate and junior teams competed for trophies as well.

Winning senior team members from Dubuque County are Kayla Demmer, Elizabeth Gaul, Clint Heacock, Luke Rauen, Mark Simon, Kurt Wolf and Ted Wolf.

The Fayette County team finished second in the senior division. Team members were Katie Steinlage, Jeremy Lueder, Kristin Baumler and Brittany Lantzky.

The Fayette County team won the intermediate division. Team members were Katie Adams, Dan Stewart, Chris Stewart and Jacob Scott.

The Dubuque County team placed second in the intermediate division.  Team members were Jessie Hammerand, Bethany Simon, Josh Simon and Scotty Wolf.

Fayette County teams finished in both first and second place in the junior division.  The winning team members were Nichole Fagle, Troy Bishop, Joey Adams and Brant Bushman.  The second place team members were Molly Schmitt, Dayle Lantzky, John Scott and Kayla Fagle. 

Dubuque County teams were coached by Dee Gaul, Shirley Simon and Kim Wolf. Fayette County teams were coached by Marilyn Steffens, Jonna Worden and Jared Stewart.

The Fayette County 4-H Dairy Club presented a traveling trophy to each division winner in honor of two former 4-H dairy project participants who died in an airplane accident in 2005, Connie Stewart and her daughter, Sarah Stewart. Dairy Farmers of America sponsored trophies for the statewide event, and the Iowa 4-H Foundation Dairy Endowment will provide funding for the senior team’s trip to Louisville, Ky.
