Dads Are a Legacy

7/17/2006

A father’s influence lasts a lifetime. Not only do children benefit from a father’s involvement in their growing up years, but that connection enhances the adult years as well, said Kristi Cooper, an Iowa State University Extension family life field specialist.

ISU Extension’s Me & My Dad Web site, (www.extension.iastate.edu/dads), offers information on the importance of fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives.

Research shows that adults whose fathers were actively engaged in their lives grow up to be happier and healthier, earn more income, achieve higher levels of education and have stronger and longer marriages as a result, Cooper said.

“If you were to write your obituary today, what would it say about your relationship with your children?” Cooper asked. “Would they be able to see your influence in keeping them in school, succeeding in employment and having satisfying relationships?”

Dads who know their children’s friends, teachers and activities can help their child reach his or her potential in social and academic endeavors, Cooper said. Daily physical care including diapering, feeding, bathing and playing are important means for dads to teach self care, independence and problem solving.

“It’s also fun!” Cooper said. “Father’s play tends to be more active and physical than Mother’s play, so when Dad is around, kids get a workout while learning.”
