AMES, Iowa -- A handy new reference guide is now available for gardeners and garden visitors. “The Garden Guide to Midwest Annuals & Perennials” features photos and basic information about 300 annual and perennial plants, including roses, ornamental grasses, herbs, vines and water plants.

“The guide is designed to take along when visiting  gardens or even shopping for plants,” said Linda Naeve, Iowa State University Extension program specialist. “It’s spiral so it won’t just flop shut when you open it to a page plus it includes space for taking notes about what you see.”

The easy-to-carry, 5 x 8 1/2 inch book includes an index and uses symbols to convey some information, such as whether the plant is an annual or perennial, what sun or shade requirements it has and whether it can be used in containers or for special uses such as to attract butterflies.

“We've also included photos and descriptions of 60 Buck roses,” Naeve said.

“The Garden Guide to Midwest Annuals & Perennials” (PM 1966) is available for $8 from Iowa State University Extension county offices and the Iowa State University Extension Distribution Center in Ames (www.extension.iastate.edu/store/).
