AMES, Iowa-- Summer camps aren't only for kids this year. The Iowa 4-H Center in conjunction with Iowa State University (ISU) Extension is offering four different family summer camp options in 2006 that range from overnight to all weekend.
According to the American Camp Association (ACA), there has been a 66 percent increase in family camps in the last 15 years. This growth is due in part to families wanting an escape from school or work for some much needed family time.
The 4-H Center offers camps called "Just 4 the Family," which are "Cheaper-by-the-Dozen" style for family fun time. The center is located on 1,100 acres of land along the Des Moines River near Madrid in Boone County and is only a 20-minute drive from the ISU campus. Membership in 4-H is not required to attend the camps.
Traci Haselhuhn, program specialist at the center, said, "4-H camps create opportunities for parents and children to share experiences together. These camps are a wonderful way to spend time in the great outdoors while still being economical, relaxing and entertaining. They offer a hassle-free family vacation."
The first camp is "Mother and Daughter Getaway" from June 9 to 11. The weekend is for moms and daughters ages 7 and up and includes spa events, scrapbooking, teatime, swimming and cooking. Guests stay in air-conditioned, carpeted cabins.
Also offered is "Father and Son Getaway" from July 28 to 30. This camp is for ages 7 and up and will include activities such as archery, swimming, fishing, exploring nature and tackling a climbing tower. Guests stay in air-conditioned, carpeted cabins and can enjoy family-style meals in the dining hall.
Another camp is "Bring A Big Person" that allows kids from ages 6 to 11 to bring an age-18-or-over adult of their choice. While staying in air-conditioned Elm Lodge, campers can swim, play games, hike, make crafts, go on a creek walk or canoe. This camp is from June 23 to 25.
The above camps are $90 for youth and $90 for adults with available discounts for early registrations.
All ages may attend the "O' Fashioned Family Weekend" that includes an array of activities for the whole family. This camp runs August 5 to 6 for $75 per person.
The Iowa 4-H Center is ACA accredited and available for facility rentals year-round. Haselhuhn describes the 4-H Center as a "beautiful, scenic site in the heart of Iowa."
