Neely-Kinyon Field Day Focuses on the Future

GREENFIELD, Iowa -- Plan to attend the Neely-Kinyon Field Day on Wednesday, Aug. 23 for an evening of education, entertainment and eating. The research farm is owned by the Wallace Foundation for Rural Research and Development and operated by Iowa State University (ISU).

 

Wagon tours of the fields will begin at 4 p.m. The wagon will make three stops including one at the pasture where two groups of yearling cattle are being finished. Darrell Busby, ISU Extension field specialist, will share the research concerning use of co-products, including distillers grain in cattle rations. Corn production and future of corn in Iowa will be the topic of stop with Roger Elmore, professor, Agronomy. The final stop will feature Kathleen Delate, associate professor, Agronomy, discussing research plots where a no-till roller was used to control cover crops ahead of planting organic grain or vegetable crops.

 

A complimentary supper provided by area financial institutions will  be held immediately following the wagon tours. Local commodity groups will be grilling the supper and Prairie Harvest CSA will provide fresh tomatoes, peppers and onions. Jack Van Laar will provide musical entertainment throughout the evening.

 

Three after-supper workshops are offered beginning at 7 p.m. with “Farming Down Under.”  Kathleen Delate will share highlights of her six-month sabbatical in New Zealand. Soil quality will be discussed in a workshop lead by Madhi Al-Kaisi, associate professor, Agronomy, and includes Kevin Kuhn, Adair County District Conservationist, Vickie Wright, Adair County Farm Service Agency and Chad Martin, Iowa Farm Bureau. Learn grafting techniques at the Nut Tree Production workshop with Harold and Doris Kentner and Gerald and Joan Mayne of the Iowa Nut Growers Association.
