Beef Feedlot Environmental Session Set for Aug. 24

8/3/2006

OSAGE, Iowa – Beef feedlot producers and ag business representatives in the Mitchell County area are invited to a session to address environmental issues Aug. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the VFW in Osage.

“The session is designed to bring resources that can help producers evaluate and manage their feedlot operation and protect water quality” said Russ Euken, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension livestock specialist. “From planning a feedlot or making improvements to an existing lot or funding improvements, we should have something for everyone.”

Euken added that there is a lot of interest in expanding feedlots and in improving feedlot design to improve cattle performance and environmental protection.

Producers are encouraged to attend a short opening session then rotate through any of eight different stations designed to answer their questions about regulations, management and technical issues concerning beef feedlots and environmental issues. These stations will repeat every 20 to 25 minutes.

Representatives of ISU Extension, the Iowa Beef Center, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and NRCS will be responding to questions at each station.

A meal will be served at the start of the session at 5:30 p.m. sponsored by the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Osage. The session is free of charge For more information contact the Mitchell County Extension office in Osage at (641) 732-5574 or Russ Euken at (641) 923-2856.
