AMES, Iowa--The Iowa 4-H Foundation recently honored a retired state 4-H leader with a flagpole dedication and flag raising ceremony at the Extension 4-H Youth Building on the Iowa State University (ISU) campus in Ames.
The flagpole, third tallest on the ISU campus, was installed to recognize C.J. Gauger, state 4-H leader from 1959-1979, for his commitment to 4-H.
“Iowa State University is the home of 4-H in Iowa, so it is really neat to fly the symbol of the largest youth organization in the nation,” said Chuck Morris, director of the Iowa 4-H and Youth programs.
Gauger said that the new flagpole should be seen as the Iowa 4-H program’s flagpole, rather than his.
“The unique attitude of ISU Extension staff is ‘It isn’t about us. It’s about the youth.’ C. J. models that description,” said Morris.
The Extension 4-H Youth Building is one of two 4-H centers in the country to be housed on the campus of the state’s land grant university.
