Iowa State University Offers Online Horticulture Courses Spring Semester


AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University is offering online horticulture courses in houseplants, vegetables and annual flowers spring semester. Each course is five weeks long.

Horticulture 493C, Houseplants, begins Jan. 9 and ends Feb. 10. Students will learn houseplant selection for different indoor conditions and study 40 popular foliage and blooming houseplants.

Vegetables, Horticulture 493D, begins Feb. 13. Students will study cultural practices for 40 vegetable varieties and learn the basics of growing vegetables in containers.

Annual garden flowers are the subject of Horticulture 493A, which begins March 27. The course covers 40 annual flowers suitable for Iowa gardens.

The courses are appropriate for anyone who would like to expand his or her gardening knowledge, including homeowners, master gardeners and current Iowa State University students.
Students should expect to spend between two and three hours each week studying lessons and completing assignments. There is no prerequisite for any of the courses. Courses may be taken for noncredit, one undergraduate credit or one nonmajor graduate credit. Tuition and fees for one undergraduate credit are $295, for graduate credit $398.50. The noncredit fee per course is $69 if students register more than a month before a course begins; after that the noncredit registration fee is $89.

Courses are divided into several units with a quiz following each unit. Those enrolling for academic credit must submit a final project for each course.
Yvonne Nilles is the instructor. She received a Master of Science in horticulture from Iowa State in 2002. Nilles is the ISU Extension horticulturist for Hamilton, Humboldt, Webster and Wright counties. She currently serves as the first vice president for the Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa and is a National Garden Club Inc. flower show judge.
