AMES, Iowa — Three Iowa State University students are working in Story County this summer as part of ISU Extension’s Life in Iowa intern program.
Katelyn Phelps, whose hometown is Malvern and who is a senior majoring in management, is working for McFarland Clinic PC as a human resource intern. She is helping convert paper documents and files to an electronic documentation system. She also will assist with a variety of human resource functions.
Nathan Katzer, a junior in agronomy from Creston, is working for Sauer Danfoss. His work is concentrated on the Sauer Danfoss Academy, a corporate university that has been in development for two and a half years. He is working on a perception study and writing a global status report of the work accomplished. Katzer also will help research and investigate learning management systems.
Holly Boston, a senior in management from Sioux City, also is working for Sauer Danfoss. She is a human resources intern working in recruiting, payroll and the human resources information systems. Boston is working with scheduling, screening and interviewing, as well as helping manage the paperwork involved in the recruitment process.
Each Life in Iowa intern donates 100 hours of time over the summer to a community volunteer project. Phelps is volunteering at the Ames Chamber of Commerce. She is helping with events including the Chamber Golf Day and Business at Breakfast, as well as helping with office tasks such as Web updates and mailings.
Katzer is volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. He will work on two homes in Story County and also help coordinate the bike ride on July 31. Boston is volunteering at The Arc of Story County helping youth with evening activities such as bowling, track, dance and soccer.
The Life in Iowa program encourages students to stay in Iowa after college graduation by involving them in the communities in which they are working. The interns complement their work experience with classroom learning and service projects that help them experience the people, businesses and organizations that make Iowa a great place to live and work. The program encourages students to develop leadership, ethics and service skills that will help them in the future.
