AMES, Iowa -- A $500 scholarship has been awarded to a Webster County 4-H member. Michael Nelson, Gowrie, received the Alumni 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Nelson, a nine-year 4-H member, is the son of John and Pam Nelson. He has served as president, secretary, reporter and recreation officer of his 4-H club. Nelson has participated most actively in the communications, cat, music, issues, and food and nutrition project areas. He has served on the state, county and area 4-H councils. In addition, Nelson is a member of the Iowa 4-H Technology Team and has attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference and the Citizenship-Washington Focus conference. Nelson received a state music project award and was the Webster County 4-H Fair king. He is a cat project junior leader and has won county achievement and outstanding senior member awards.

"4-H has taught me a great deal of valuable life skills," Nelson said. "The experiences I have had have shaped me as a person and the opportunities it has given me helped me decide my future goals."

Nelson is a senior at Prairie Valley High School, where he is president of the National Honor Society and was an all-state speech participant. He plans to attend Drake University to study English.
