Story County 4-H Member Receives Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship

AMES, Iowa -- A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Story County 4-H member. Garrett Skaar, Story City, received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Advancement of Agriculture.

Skaar, a seven-year 4-H member, is the son of Brad and Julie Skaar. He has served as president, vice president, secretary and reporter of his 4-H club. Skaar has participated most actively in the beef, sheep, photography, communications and leadership project areas. He has served on his county 4-H council and youth committee and attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. Skaar has won 4-H Premier Beef Exhibitor and 4-H showmanship awards at the Iowa State Fair, and was Catch-a-Calf Record Book Champion at AK-SAR-BEN. Skaar also attended the World Food Prize Symposium and was chosen as a Borlang-Ruan youth internship winner.

"My 4-H experiences have really allowed me to develop my time management skills and have given me a chance to demonstrate responsibility," Skaar said. "My career in food science and meat science comes in large part from my livestock projects in 4-H."

Skaar is a senior at Roland-Story High School. He plans to attend Iowa University to study food science.
