Osceola County 4-H Member Receives Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship

AMES, Iowa -- A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to an Osceola County 4-H member. Timothy Berkland, Sibley, received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Advancement of Agriculture.

Berkland, a 10-year 4-H member, is the son of Daniel and Loretta Berkland. He has served as president, vice president and treasurer of his 4-H club. Berkland has participated most actively in the horse and pony, leadership, citizenship, beef, woodworking and animal science project areas and has received state project awards in horse and leadership. He has served on his county 4-H council and has received his county's Danforth "I Dare You" and Ak-Sar-Ben leadership awards. Berkland has also been active in grant writing for Pioneer Community Improvement and Iowa Promise Grants to benefit the McCallum Museum in Sibley.

"My participation in 4-H has taught me valuable life skills in record-keeping, leadership, citizenship and communications. All of these are essential for success in any career," Berkland said. "I believe that the leadership skills I have practiced in 4-H will carry me into an excellent leadership position in American agriculture."

Berkland is a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School where he is on the honor roll, serves as class president, and won first team all-state honors for football. He plans to attend Iowa State University to study animal science.
