Monroe County 4-H Member Receives Bettis 4-H Scholarship

AMES, Iowa -- A $500 scholarship has been awarded to a Monroe County 4-H member. Sheena Spurgin, Ames, received the Bettis 4-H Scholarship sponsored by Lloyd and Kathryn Bettis in memory of Herbert Bettis.

Spurgin, a nine-year 4-H member, is the daughter of Tim and Vicki Spurgin. She has served as historian of her 4-H club and secretary for the 4-H youth council. Spurgin has participated most actively in the swine, clothing selection, fashion review, food and nutrition and communication project areas.

"4-H taught me leadership, communication and trust at a young age and since then I have been very involved in the agricultural industry," Spurgin said. "Being involved in 4-H at a young age allowed me to get my feet wet in agriculture and to learn more about the opportunities out there."

Spurgin is a sophomore at Iowa State University where she is studying agricultural business and international agriculture. She was recently elected a student body senator for the College of Agriculture, and is also involved in Collegiate FFA, the Block and Bridle Club and the Ag Business Club.
