AMES, Iowa -- A $500 scholarship has been awarded to a Buchanan County 4-H member. Becky McLaren, Independence, received the Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.

McLaren, a ten-year 4-H member, is the daughter of James and Janet McLaren. She has served as president, vice president, secretary and photographer of her 4-H club. McLaren has participated most actively in the dairy, beef, clothing, home improvement and food and nutrition project areas. She has served on the state, county and area 4-H councils and attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. McLaren has received county outstanding beef and dairy project awards and the "Danforth I Dare You" leadership award.

"4-H has provided numerous opportunities for me to get involved in the community and with others," McLaren said. "Through various 4-H projects I have learned about myself and plan to pursue a career in dairy science and stay involved in 4-H."

McLaren is a senior at Independence High School where she is a National Honor Society member and captain of the soccer team. She plans to attend Northeast Iowa Community College to study dairy science.
