AMES, Iowa — Katelyn Phelps, whose hometown is Malvern and who is a senior majoring in management, is working for McFarland Clinic PC in Ames as a human resource intern. Her summer work is part of ISU Extension’s Life in Iowa program. She is helping convert paper documents and files to an electronic documentation system. She also will assist with a variety of human resource functions.

Each Life in Iowa intern donates 100 hours of time over the summer to a community volunteer project. Phelps is volunteering at the Ames Chamber of Commerce. She is helping with events including the Chamber Golf Day and Business at Breakfast, as well as helping with office tasks such as Web updates and mailings.

The Life in Iowa program encourages students to stay in Iowa after college graduation by involving them in the communities in which they are working. The interns complement their work experience with classroom learning and service projects that help them experience the people, businesses and organizations that make Iowa a great place to live and work. The program encourages students to develop leadership, ethics and service skills that will help them in the future.
