Streambank Grazing Field Day Scheduled
8/12/2005
RHODES, Iowa -- A grazing field day is planned for Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Iowa State University (ISU) Research Farm near Rhodes. The site of this program is the Streambank Grazing Research project being led by Jim Russell and funded by Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. The field day includes a wide variety of topics and experts from ISU and ISU Extension.
The agenda for the field day includes sessions on weed and thistle control, covered by Bob Hartzler, extension weeds specialist. Grazing behavior observations of cows in different grazing systems will be discussed by Nathan Quam, research scientist, ISU. Dan Morrical will lead an evaluation of pasture conditions between continuous and rotationally grazed paddocks. The last item on the agenda is a discussion of our experience with water crossing construction and cow use as a watering location.
The field day begins at 6 p.m. at the Rhodes research farm, which is located just of Highway 330, north of Baxter and east of Collins, or directly north of the Harvester Golf Club. Included is a free steak sandwich prepared by the Marshall County Cattlemen.
There is no pre-registration and the field day is free of charge as part of the outreach effort on this research project.
