Farmland Leasing Meeting
June 10, 2014

Muscatine County Extension will be hosting a Farmland Leasing Meeting.   Attendees will be given an understanding of current cash rental rate surveys and the factors driving next years rents such as market trends and input costs.    A total of ten meetings will be held in East Central Iowa during the month of August.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Muscatine County will be coordinating a meeting for crop marketing strategies and the New Farm Program with the Lee Agency. This meeting is designed to help farmers, landowners, and other agri-business professionals with current issues related to marketing 2014 crops and pending enrollment decisions in the New Farm Program.

Muscatine County Extension is offering the Homegrown Lifestyle course which is a 12-week Extension short course for folks eager to reconnect to the land, grow their own food, and create a sustainable personal farmscape. Weekly sessions will consist of webinars taught by state specialists and locally-coordinated activities at each site. The course also includes visits to local farms and gardens to experience sustainable food production first hand.

Members of the Lake 4-H Club in Muscatine County collected more than 1,000 empty, non-recyclable dog food and other livestock feed bags to turn them into something useful for the people of Haiti who have been devistated with storms and earthquakes.  The bags can become tarps or they can become bags with handles and be made very useful to them.  ServeHAITI representatives will deliver the bags to Haiti where they will be put to good uses.

From a simple decision to raise a few rabbits as a 4-H project, Mike’s curiosity and love of learning has led him to a lifelong hobby and taken him to the top in the rabbit world. With the help of caring adults along the way, his grandfather for purchasing his first rabbits and a local rabbit breeder taking Mike under his wing, Mike has been able to achieve much success from his humble 4-H rabbit project.

 Cathann Kress, ISU Vice President for Extension and Outreach will be at the Muscatine County Fair to made a special presentation at  the Muscatine County Fairgrounds in West Liberty.

In 1912, Muscatine County was the fifth county in Iowa to employ a county agent.   Since then the Muscatine County Extension office has helped carry out Iowa State University’s land-grant mission beyond campus.  Today we are working to be the university that best serves the citizens of Iowa.
