Johnson is 4-H Hall of Fame Honoree

Wanda Johnson of Elliott will be inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17. Eighty-two Iowa counties are participating this year and 110 inductees will be recognized for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members will be presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they are introduced on stage.  Johnson will be recognized at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow the presentations.

Wanda Johnson’s contribution to the Montgomery County 4-H program has been widely felt for 30 years.  She has been a leader for the Busy Boosters, Northeast Herdsmen, and now the East Sunrisers clubs, as well as co-leading the county Clover Kids program.  Wanda has fostered and kindled the lives of so many 4-H children and has become an inspiration for other club leaders. She has treated all of the kids as if they were her very own.  Wanda is very deserving of being recognized for her gifts of love and commitment to the Montgomery County 4-H program. Helping hands and a caring heart is what Wanda is all about.

“Counties select inductees for their exceptional work in contributing to the lives of 4-H members and the overall 4-H program,” said Stephanie Langner, ISU Extension and Outreach Program Coordinator in Montgomery County.  Many inductees served as club leaders, youth mentors, fair superintendents or fair board members, Iowa State University Extension county council members, county youth council members, fair judges, financial supporters, chaperones or ISU Extension and Outreach staff members. The inductees have demonstrated dedication, encouragement, commitment and guidance to Iowa 4-H’ers through the years.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the counties and state to recognize and celebrate 4-H volunteers and staff who are committed to Iowa’s youth and the 4-H Youth Development program,” said Chris Gleason, a 4-H youth specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

The Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame was initiated in 2002 to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of 4-H. A summary of previous honorees will be on display at the 2014 Iowa State Fair in the 4-H Exhibits Building.

Information about previous inducteesto the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame also is available on the Iowa 4-H Foundation website, organized by year and by county.
