 2015 Montgomery County Fair:  July 14-19

Download the 2015 Montgomery County 4-H & FFA Fair Book

Click here to download the 2015 Montgomery County Fair Open Class Fairbook.  These events include: Arts and Crafts, Photography, Flowers, Gardening and Baking.  Entry is on the morning of Wednesday, July 15, and is open to residents of Montgomery County and adjacent counties. 

Open Class Bucket/Bottle Calf – Registration Extended!  The Montgomery County Fair Board will once again sponsor the open class Bucket/Bottle Calf show at the fair.  The open class Bucket/Bottle Calf show is open to all kindergarten through 3rd graders in Montgomery County.  Any newborn or orphan calf, steer or heifer, daily or beef, that was calved between March 1st and May 15th may be shown.  Calf must be bucket or bottle fed.  The Bucket/Bottle Calf show will be held on Sunday, July 19th at 2:00 pm with check-in from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.  Bucket/Bottle Calf packets can be picked up at the Montgomery County Extension and Outreach Office at 400 Bridge Street.  Registration has been extended to Monday, June 1st.  For questions, contact the extension office at 712-623-2592 or open class Bucket/Bottle Calf superintendent Mary Gohlinghorst at 712-623-9041.

As the weather heats up and we leave cold behind us; flowers are blooming, and insects are OUT! It’s that time of year where we take additional precaution to protect the little ones from bites and stings.   As you know repellents are effective in preventing bites by mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, and biting flies, but have virtually no effect on stinging insects such as bees, hornets, and wasps.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach food safety specialists need help in acquiring samples of aronia berry jam and jelly for an upcoming ISU Extension and Outreach research project. Researchers are collecting jams and jellies for their project this summer through July 1, 2016. Their goal is help the FDA establish a standard of identity for aronia berry jams and jellies.

Commercial production topics and practices will be featured at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 2015 Fruit and Vegetable Field Day on Monday, August 10 at the ISU Horticulture Research Station, near Ames. The annual event will begin at 1:30 p.m. and conclude with a social and dinner following the educational components. The Research Station is located at 55519 170th Street, north of Ames.
