Weeds, herbicides and the effectiveness of herbicides to control weeds are topics of agronomic and economic importance to farmers and agribusinesses.  Weed challenges are the number one issue facing farmers in the next 5 years.  The Weed Field Day will be held August 4 at the Armstrong research farm beginning at with the Agribusiness Session at 9:30am.  Lunch will be served at 12:00 followed by the Farmer-Oriented Session at 1:00pm.

As the weather heats up and we leave cold behind us; flowers are blooming, and insects are OUT! It’s that time of year where we take additional precaution to protect the little ones from bites and stings.   As you know repellents are effective in preventing bites by mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, and biting flies, but have virtually no effect on stinging insects such as bees, hornets, and wasps.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach food safety specialists need help in acquiring samples of aronia berry jam and jelly for an upcoming ISU Extension and Outreach research project. Researchers are collecting jams and jellies for their project this summer through July 1, 2016. Their goal is help the FDA establish a standard of identity for aronia berry jams and jellies.

Commercial production topics and practices will be featured at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 2015 Fruit and Vegetable Field Day on Monday, August 10 at the ISU Horticulture Research Station, near Ames. The annual event will begin at 1:30 p.m. and conclude with a social and dinner following the educational components. The Research Station is located at 55519 170th Street, north of Ames.

Montgomery County will offer a “Last Chance” Private Pesticide Applicator Continuing Instructional Course (CIC) for private pesticide applicators on Wednesday, April 15th at the Montgomery County Extension office in Red Oak, Iowa. This program is shown in cooperation with the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP).
