Nearly 175 4-H members and volunteers from across the state gathered in Des Moines at the State Capitol Building on Wednesday, March 26 for the seventh annual 4-H Day at the Legislature. 4-H members participating from Monroe County were Mary Pat Sinclair, Pason Hermsen, Shelby Wilson and Susana Merrick. Angela Tratchel, Monroe County 4-H Youth Coordinator was the adult advisor for the event. The day was kicked off with a breakfast sponsored by the Iowa Egg Council and held in the Historical Building with opening ceremonies following. Monroe County 4-H members Shelby Wilson and Susana Merrick were chosen to sing the National Anthem for the special event. The members completed the day with a capitol tour and special seminar sessions which focused on leadership and citizenship attributes.
Monroe County 4-H members were honored with a special private session with the Honorable Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge in her chambers. The members were also hosted by Representative Richard Arnold in the House Chambers.
The purpose of the event is to give 4-H membes the chance to learn about the legislatiave process, learn more about current events and what the legislators are working on this year, and sharing with the legislators what is going on in the 4-H program on the local level. The event was a celebration and learning experience for all in attendance. The Iowa 4-H program has always held a strong focus on communication, leadership, citizenship, and community service skills that are developed through youth involvement. This was a great way to provide 4-H'ers with a fun opportunity to learn about government in action and career choices, while at the same time, increase awareness and visibility of 4-H as a great vital youth program throughout the state of Iowa.
