Livestock Judging Team

Seven Monroe County 4-H members participated in the 2008 Block & Bridle Livestock Judging Contest held on April 13th at Kildee Hall on the Iowa State University Campus.  The participants were all entered in the Junior 4-H Division of the contest and separated into 2 teams.  Monroe County Team #1 consisted of Jordan Crall, Cody McCarty and Mikayla VandenBerg.  They placed as the 3rd Overall Team.  The Monroe County Team #2 consisted of Colton Shull, Colin Herbold, Aaron Kurimski and Erik Schofield and they placed as the 5th team overall.  Overall individuals were awarded to Monroe County team members of Jordan Crall, 3rd place and Colton Shull 5th place.  Specialized species awards in the beef division went to Cody McCarty 1st place, Jordan Crall 2nd place, and Colton Shull 4th place.  In the swine division 3rd place was awarded to Aaron Kurimski and Jordan Crall placed 2nd in the sheep division. There was a total of 20 4-H members from all over the state of Iowa competing in this contest in the junior division.

These members attended special informational sessions which were instructed by Daryl Schofield, Albia FFA Advisor and Angela Tratchel, Monroe County 4-H Youth Coordinator.  Each member judged 8 classes consisting of ewes, rams, angus heifers, Simmental heifers, gilts, and 2 classes of market hogs. Each class consisted of 4 animals and members individually judged and placed each class in a 10 minute time period.  Three classes were pre-chosen and members had to answer a set of specialized questions and points were acquired.  “The 4-H program highly regards programs such as livestock judging for many reasons.  Livestock Judging has been associated with developing a variety of employer preferred skills such as problem solving, decision making and communication.” Said Angela Tratchel.  “This type of educational program also improves critical thinking skills, builds self confidence and gives the building blocks to team skills which are all important life skills that employers so desire.”

The teams plan to participate and compete in various upcoming contests throughout the summer of 2008.
