The Iowa State University Extension Office in association with the Monroe County DNR held their first Fishing Club Outing for the 2008-2009 school year on Tuesday, September 16th. The group, consisting of 22 youth members in grades 3rd-5th , met and fished for the afternoon at a pond furnished by Dean & Natalie Lathrop, Lathrop Farms of Albia.
The Monroe County Fishing Club provides a safe and healthy learning environment for the youth that participate. The group meets on the early dismissal dates from the Albia Community School District and transportation is provided to various ponds around the county.
The members learn various aspects in the areas of safety, fishing etiquette, types of fish, new skills and have a lot of fun. “It takes great skilled volunteers to put on this type of program” said Angela Tratchel, Monroe County 4-H Youth Coordinator. “Their hard work and dedication make the fishing days a fun and educational event for all youth in attendance”.
Adult volunteers and extension staff man this vibrant group of kids. The volunteers attending were Pat Sinnott, John Schoolen, Hjalmer Lindberg, Dean Williams, Mike Runyan and Paul Hatfield. Staff members consisted of Brenda Spurgeon, Youth Field Specialist and Angela Tratchel, Monroe County 4-H Youth Coordinator.
